Goshobessho
BLJ Tips & Insights
Feel transported to an otherworldly and reinvigorating retreat in one of Japan’s most revered and historic spa towns. Located in a lush, verdant setting in the Arima Onsen hills, Goshobessho is both a sanctuary and a luxurious hideaway.
This exclusive, 10-suite ryokan features three types of accommodations, all of which offer generous square footage. Each one also has its own private ensuite hot-spring bath for maximum relaxation. Villa-type rooms are designed with higher ceilings for a greater sense of space, while two-storey, maisonette-style accommodations offer more privacy.
This storied retreat, evoking the deep serenity and closeness to nature of a remote Japanese hamlet, was once a 17th century temple that visitors frequented for rejuvenating strolls and picnics. Over time, it transformed into the Kiyomizu Hotel, a rare cosmopolitan inn that welcomed foreign guests with English-speaking staff and all accoutrements of an international hotel – such Western breakfasts of bread rolls, butter and coffee – to make them feel comfortable.
Today Goshobessho is a modern-day hermitage that restores all who come and stay, dine on the sumptuous seasonal cuisine of the Hyogo region, and bathe in the mineral rich thermal baths fed with Arima Onsen’s legendary healing waters.
