The Shinmonzen

Kyoto / Kyoto

BLJ Tips & Insights
The Shinmonzen is an exclusive, nine-suite luxury boutique hotel in the Gion district, where the soul and mystique of Old Kyoto are alive in the area’s atmospheric alleys, heritage architecture and traditional arts. The hotel takes its name from Shinmonzen Street, a narrow, intimate street of woodblock print galleries and antiques shops. The result of a 10-year creative endeavor by Swiss hotelier Patrick McKillen, the acclaimed architect Tadao Ando and interior designer Rémi Tessier, The Shinmonzen is the fullest expression of the Japanese concept of omotenashi, or the art subtle but sublime hospitality. The Shinmonzen’s guiding aesthetic is the beauty of contrast, and the building itself is an interplay between the old and the new. Its façade, a muted and moody palette of deep-brown and gray-black timber, is a nod to the traditional wooden houses called machiya found in the entire district. In keeping with the hushed atmosphere of the street, a single letter S brushed on a noren curtain marks the entrance. But inside, each suite is a unique and subtle take on the marriage of east and west: following a neutral color scheme of natural wood and cream-colored upholstery, with discreet but playful pops of bright color from a piece of statement furniture or artwork on the wall, every room feels once Japanese and northern European. The hotel derives inspiration from the ryokan, or traditional Japanese inn, where carefully considered elements conspire to provide the traveler with a deep sense of rest and rejuvenation for the road ahead. For this reason, every suite at The Shinmonzen offers a view of the serene and scenic Shirakawa river, and in-property dining, vital to the ryokan experience, will include chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s take on Kyoto’s seasonal and locally sourced produce, all set in a Stephanie Goto-designed restaurant.
